Machakos Governor, Dr. Alfred Mutua

Dr. Alfred Nganga Mutua was born on August 22, 1970. He is a two-term governor of Machakos county and an entrepreneur. Mutua also served as the official government spokesperson during the third president, Mwai Kibaki regime. He is a man full of energy and a committed leader.

In president William Ruto’s government, Alfred Mutua is the Cabinet Secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

Mutua’s early life

On August 22, 1970, in a Masii, Machakos county a baby boy was born. The name of the boy is the now Machakos governor, Dr. Alfred Nganga Mutua. Just like many Kenyans, Mutua comes from a humble background. He has a sister, Ann Mutua. His mother is Agnes Mutua. Little is known about his father.

Education

The soft spoken politician started his schooling at Toi Primary, Kibera. He went to Dagoreti High School for his o level and later joined Jamuhuri High School for his A level education.

Upon completing his A level education, Mutua joined Whitworth College in the USA for his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism. He also holds a masters degree in Communications from Eastern Washington University, USA and a Doctorate in Communications and Media from the University of Western Sydney in Australia.

Journalism

At the age of 15 years, Mutua published his first article in the daily newspaper. Upon completing his high school education, he wrote articles for Sunday newspaper, Standard newspaper and Kenya times. His passion for writing never ended in Kenya.

While studying in the USA, Mutua wrote articles for several American newspapers and even started an “African in America” documentary.

Alfred Mutua has worked on TV stations such as PBS in Seattle, USA and Nation Media Group.

Lecturer, Alfred Mutua

Mutua has also lectured at a number of universities. He began lecturing at the University of Western Sydney, Macquarie University and several TAFE colleges in Sydney. From Sydney, he moved to The United Arab Emirates as an Assistant Professor of Communication and Media at Zayed University. At Zayed University undertook research on the role of media and communication in peace and stability.

Business Ventures

At the age of 21 years, Alfred Mutua started his first business, Golden Dreams Company Limited (GDC). The company produced Kenya’s first TV series, The Cobra Squad and a family show Beba Beba.

Public Service

In 2004, Mutua was appointed as the first official government spokesperson by the late president Hon. Mwai Kibaki. Apart from being a spokesperson, Mutua also served as public communications secretary and Head of the office of Public Communications in the president’s office. He resigned in September 2012 to pursue his political ambitions.

Political Career.

After resigning from being a government spokesperson, Mutua vied for Machakos country gubernatorial seat using a Wiper ticket and won. On March 27, 2013, Mutua became the first Machakos county governor under 2010 constitution.

He set the pace and agenda for Machakos county development plans. Upon completing his first term, he was re-elected in 2017 using the Maendeleo Chap Chap party. Having served his constitutional two terms the governor has a bigger political ambition of becoming Kenya’s president.

Cabinet Secretary appointed

Dr. Alfred Mutua is the current cabinet secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs under William Ruto administration from 27 October 2022. The former Machakos County former takes over from Raychelle Omamo.

Marriage and Children

Alfred has a first and second wife. The first wife is known as Josephine Thitu Maundu. They wedded on July 1, 2001. The two have 3 children. This first family lives in Australia. Josephine divorced Mutua at the age of 51 citing an Irreconcilable misunderstanding.

Upon divorcing Josephine, Mutua married Lilian Nganga. Their relationship started in 2014 when Lilian was 29 years. The two have two children. However, the relationship did not pass the test of time. Lilian divorced Mutua on social media in 2022.
