Josephine Thitu Maundu was born in Limuru, Kiambu county to her father and mother Rehab Wanjiru. She grew up with siblings but she was close to her brother Moses Mutua Maundu.
She is also the first and ex-wife of Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Dr. Alfred Mutua.
She is an alumnus of Washington State University and has attained a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy between 1998 and 1993 and also a Master’s in Public Health from the same university. She attained her Doctorate in Pharmacy from Purdue University.
The career journey of Dr. Josephine Thitu Maundu
Dr. Maundu worked as a Senior Program Associate at Management Sciences for Health in 2004 and rose to Deputy Chief of Party role after six years. She has also been the program director for Afya Afrique, health systems strengthening consultant group in Nairobi.
Josephine Thitu is a founding director of the Machakos Women Foundation. Her seventeen-year
experience as a pharmaceutical service system specialist has enabled her and the foundation to address the needs of women in the county, especially regarding health matters.
She has also worked as a senior manager at several departments in the ministry of Health. Thitu has worked in Kenya, United Arab Emirates, Australia, and the United States for renowned health institutions and technical aid organizations.

Josephine Thitu Maundu’s husband and children
Dr. Josephine is the former wife of fifteen years to former Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua. They tied the knot on 1st July 2000 at Nairobi Baptist Church, Ngong Road. They were blessed with three children.

Their relationship came to an end in 2015. It is believed that Lilian Ng’ang’a and Alfred had an affair resulting in the divorce.
Josephine Maundu also accused the former governor of brutality, public humiliation, and child negligence. Her sentiments would be echoed by Kenya’s female detective Jane Mugo. In a lengthy post, Jane revealed she was the one who rescued Josephine, her children, and the house manager who were locked in their Westland home by the former governor. It was meant to prevent them from leaving for Australia.
However, the detective intervened and Josephine left for Australia the same day.
In 2015, they were both fighting for the custody of their children and matrimonial home in Westlands. Her statement to the police states that Mutua had not lived in the house since 2012 and surrendered it to her. The protracted legal battle was ruled in favor of Dr. Maindu who got the children’s custody and multi-million-shilling property.
