Biography

Amason Kingi is a Kenyan politician and the current senate speaker. He is also the immediate two-term governor of Kilifi County. Kingi founded Pamoja African Party.

Amason Kingi was born in 1974 in the Magarini constituency in Kilifi County. His official name is Amason Jeffah Kingi.

Amason Kingi’s career journey

After graduating from the university, Kingi practiced as a lawyer in a Mombasa-based law firm (2000-2003). He participated in the Constitution of Kenya Reform Commission (CKRC)as a district coordinator for the Kilifi District. However, his passion for politics was intense and inviting.

Political career

In 2003, Kingi successfully vied for Magarini Member of Parliament seat. He was among the youngest serving MP during the Late Mwai Kibaki regime. In 2007, Amason Kingi successfully defended his parliamentary seat using an Orange Democratic Party (ODM) ticket. He held the seat upto 2013.

During his service as an Mp, he was appointed as Minister for East African Community Affairs between (2008-2010) and the Ministry of Fisheries Development (2010-2013).

In 2013, his political ambition got bigger. He vied for the gubernatorial seat of Kilifi County under the 2010 Constitution. He won the election and became the pioneer Kilifi County Governor. In 2017, he successfully defended his second and final Kilifi County governor’s seat.

Amason Kingi speaker election at the Senate

Amason was elected as the Senate speaker on Thursday, September 8, 2022. Thereafter, he was sworn in as a senate speaker.

In the election, he garnered 46 votes out of a probable 67 votes. Therefore, he gained more than the required 2/3 votes. The election was conducted by house Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye.
