Biography of Gathoni Wamuchomba

Peninna Gathoni Muchomba who is publicly known as Gathoni Wa Muchomba is a Kenyan politician who serves as Member of Parliament in Githunguri Constituency. She is also an immediate former Kiambu County Women Representative.

Aside from that, Gathoni Wa Muchomba is a business entrepreneur as well as a media personality especially radio presenter who worked at different vernacular radio stations.

Peninna Gathoni Muchomba was born in 1975 in Komothai, Githunguri Constituency, Kiambu County. She is 49 years old. Gathoni also grew up in the same village.

The famous politician was raised up in a nuclear family. Her mother was a casual laborer at Komothai Secondary School whereas her father’s occupation is not known. However, Wamuchomba speaks unapologetically ill about her father who was an irresponsible drunkard who never cared about his family.

Peninna Gathoni Muchomba is a very educated lady. Although the primary school she attended is not in the public domain, she did her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) some years back and emerged the best student in her district.

She however, at some point lost hope of joining high school since there was no school fees but by the help of well-wishers she managed to join Precious Blood Secondary school in Riruta, Kiambu County.

Afterwards, Gathoni Wa Muchomba enrolled at the University of Nairobi after completing her secondary education. She pursued a Bachelor`s degree in education. She also has a master`s degree in communication from the same university.

Gathoni Wamuchomba career

Gathoni began by working at Makuyu Secondary school in Murang’a County as a untrained teacher before joining campus.

When she was a second year at the university, she got a job at KBC radio station through the help of her lecturer, Mary Ngechu where she hosted an agricultural program. She played a huge role of traveling countrywide identifying what farmers did at grass root levels. Such shows were then being aired on KBC.

Peninna got another opportunity to work at Kameme FM in the year 1999 when she was in her fourth year in campus. She hosted a show known as Canjamuka which aired from 9am to 1pm.

Later on, Royal Media Services chairman, S.K Macharia saw the wonderful potential of hosting radio shows in her and approached her convincing her to go work for him at Inooro FM which was to be launched some time later. Apparently, Gathoni Muchomba liked the proposal offered by S.K Macharia and began working by hosting a certain show which was loved by many. It was at that time that she was ranked the best vernacular radio presenter hence named “Queen of vernacular radio”.

Utugi TV

Through all the past experiences she had as a radio presenter, today Gathoni Muchomba is the founder and managing director of a vernacular Kikuyu television known as Utugi TV which mainly focuses on agricultural programs thus targeting farmers in Kenya.

Politics

She also ventured into politics and vied for Kiambu Women Representative in the year 2017 and won in the general elections under Jubilee Party. Following 2022 general elections, she is serving as Githunguri Constituency Member of Parliament via UDA party ticket.

As a member of parliament, she is among the few MPs that opposed the 2023/2024 financial bill. She cited that implementing the bill will further raise the cost of living for the common Kenyan.
