Lady Justice Martha Koome is the first female chief justice in Kenya’s history. She is skilled in her profession having served in almost all the ranks in the Judiciary. Before being appointed as the chief justice she served as a Court of Appeal judge.

Lady Justice was born in Kithiu village in Meru County in 1960, she is currently 64 years old.

Martha Koome Education Background

After she had gone through the primary and high school studies, Lady Justice was admitted to study a Bachelor of Law Degree at the University of Nairobi and graduated. She then went to Kenya School of Law for postgraduate diploma in law in the year 1987.

At the University of London, Martha graduated with a Master of Law in Public international law.

Martha Koome Career background

Judge Martha joined the Court of Appeal family in 2012 January as a judge. She served for a period of 15 years in the position as a judge. Having begun the legal career in 1988, this makes her to have a twenty-year experience and skills in law work. She was able to set up her own women`s law firm acting as their defender. She concentrated much on gender rights.

Martha presented people charged due to politically instigated offenses. Additionally, she was political detainees during the volatile pen of one-party rule. She took part in the section 2A repeal of the Constitution as a judge.

Currently she is serving as a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She was acknowledged as the UN person of the year run-up in 2020 by the United Nations.
