James Githii Mburu is the former Chairman and Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). He was appointed to the role on June 6, 2019 but assumed office on July 1, 2019 to effectively kick off his three-year term at the KRA.
Mburu has over 23 years of experience in tax administration, finance, policy, strategy development and implementation and in training and development.
However, Mburu resigned from KRA on 23rd February 2023.

He did his secondary education at Kianyaga High School in Kirinyaga County. Mburu attended Kenyatta University from 1993 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting.
He later attended the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) from 2011-2012 and graduated with a Master of Science in Public Policy and Analysis.

Mburu is also a Certified Public Accountant.
He worked at CFC Bank then later moved to the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) where he worked as a technical standards constable.
From 2007 to 2008 at the KRA he worked as the head of Audit policy and was later promoted to the position of Head of Audit-Large Taxpayers Office a position he served for 5 years.
He also worked for KRA as the Head of Tax Investigation at KRA from December 2013 to March 2017.
Mburu was later promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Intelligence & Strategic Operations which he served for two years where he was mandated with the task of promoting ethical conduct at KRA and combating tax evasion.
He was the appointed Chairman and Commissioner General at KRA in 2019., which was after former KRA Commissioner General, John Njiraini retired on 1st July 2019.

While in his position as the Chief of Intelligence, Mburu was a no-nonsense man especially on matters of tax cheats. He came up with a ruthless intelligence collection scheme that captured and dealt with many tax criminals.
During his term he has kept an eye on the complex tax investigations involving influential individuals and well-connected companies.
Through the intelligence network, Mburu set up, high profile tax evasion schemes have been stopped and offenders brought to book.
In 2018, he unveiled and smashed busted a multi-billion-shilling tax evasion scheme by Chinese building materials retailer house. This case is still in court.
Over the course of his term in the position of chief intelligence high profile individuals. The individuals have been charged for tax evasion. They too are fighting off multi-million tax evasion charges.
