Butler career began way back in high school where he was part of the basketball team and at his senior year his efforts got Jordan Leslie interested in him. During his college career with the Marquette, Jimmy appeared in 106 games and recorded an average of 12.0 in each game.

NBA draft

During the 2011 NBA draft, Chicago Bulls selected him as the 30th overall pick. In December same year Jimmy signed his rookie contract with the Chicago Bulls. Unfortunately, the season was facing an NBA lockout which was the most recent and the fourth one which lasted for 161 days. The season resumed on November 1st.

In his debut season Jimmy appeared in 42 games and recorded 2.6 points each game with the Bulls. When the Bulls made it to playoffs, Jimmy managed to play three matches and unfortunately recorded no point. During the NBA Summer league Jimmy joined the Bulls Roster team. When his contract expired it was extended through the 2013-2014 season, he didn’t play many games until his teammate named Luol Deng ghad an injury. With his team at the season playoffs Jimmy made 12 appearances in playoff games and recorded an average of 13.3 points per game.

In 2013 October 30th his contract was again extending for one year. He helped the Bulls to establish another Bulls record after he managed to be active on the court for 6 minutes. In 2016 Jimmy sustained strain in his left knee when playing the Denver Nuggets and cost him to miss the NBA All- star Gam of that year. He went back in March and appeared first in, a game against the Toronto Raptors. During their last game for the season with the Bulls he did well which led the Bulls to their open season game against the Boston Celtics in 2016 October.
