Rigathi Gachugua is a Kenyan politician, the current Deputy President in Kenya, businessman and former district commissioner. In addition, he is a brother to the former Nyeri County governor, Nderitu Gachagua. As of 2022, Rigathi was a Mathira constituency member of the National Assembly. Still, in 2022, Rigathe was named to be a presidential running mate to William Ruto.
On August 9, 2022, Rigathi was elected as the second Deputy President in Kenya under the 2010 constitution.

Early life
Rigathi is the 8th born to Nashashon Gachagua Reriani and Martha Kirigo. He was born in 1965 in Ruguru village of Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County. During the struggle for Kenya’s independence, Rigathi’s parents play a role as part of Mau Mau freedom fighters. His father made and serviced guns for Mau Mau.

Rigathi’s Career journey
After completing his university graduation Rigathi was employed at Kenya’s Ministry of Home Affairs & National Heritage. It is during his service that he joined Kenya Police College for paramilitary training. After completing his training Rigathi was posted as a Divisional Officer (DO) under the office of the president (1991-1992).
He rose the ranks to become a District Commissioner of Kakamega,Ng’arua and Laikipia districts. His passion for public administration led him to join the Kenya School of Government between 1999-2000 for an advanced Diploma in Public Administration. This training earned him a posting as the Personal Assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta from 2001 to 2006.
Rigathi Gachagua Political Career.
After the death of his brother, former Nyeri County governor, Nderitu Gachagua in 2017, Rigathi eyed Nyeri’s gubernatorial seat. However, He changed his mind and vied for Mathira’s parliamentary seat. He won the seat using a Jubilee party ticket.
How was Rigathi Gachagua named as Kenya Kwanza Presidential running mate?
While the Kenya Kwanza coalition sought a presidential running mate for the 2022 general election, Rigathi Gachagua’s name featured. He rose above Tharaka Nthi senator, Kithure Kindiki.
Other interested politicians were Anne Waiguru, Ndindi Nyoro, Alice wahome and speaker Justin Muturi.
Rigathi is a good public mobilizer. He is the presidential running mate of William Ruto.
