Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati was born on the 22nd of December 1961 in Bungoma County but has his routes in Kiminini Trans Nzoia county. He is a lawyer and Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Chebukati started schooling at St Peters Primary School in Mumias where he sat for his primary education. Later he proceeded to Bokoli Secondary School and finally to Lenana High School where he completed his secondary school education.
Chebukati is a graduate of the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor’s degree in Law. He also attended the Kenya School of Law for his practicing license. Chebukati was admitted to the role of an advocate in 1986.
Wafula also holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (JKUAT).

Career Journey of Wafula Chebukati
Chebukati is an advocate by profession with his practice areas being international commerce, trade and investment law, corporate law, governance, and environmental law.
He founded the Cootow & Associates Advocates law firm in 2006. The firm is based in Nairobi.
In addition to being an advocate, Chebukati is also a politician. He vied for the seat of Saboti Member of Parliament under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Unfortunately, the odds didn’t favor him as he lost the seat to Eugene Wamalwa who vied under the Party of National Unity (PNU).
He took the oath of office at the Supreme Court in January 2017 to succeed Issack Hassan as the IEBC chairman. He has presided over three elections.

Wafula Chebukati is married to Mary Chebukati and has three children namely, Rachael, Jonathan and Emmanuel Chebukati.
His wife Mary has served in public service for many years majorly as an accountant in prominent institutions.
It is alleged that Chebukati has relations with the speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula. This sparked controversy during the 2022 general elections as it was claimed he could influence the outcome of the elections.

The IEBC chairman is estimated to be worth between Ksh. 150-200 million. He is an avid golf player and is a member of the Kenyan Golfing Society. Chebukati served as the captain and chairman.
