Tabitha Mukami Muigai Karanja is a Kenyan politician, entrepreneur, and businesswoman. She is the current senator of Nakuru County and Chief Executive Officer of Keroche breweries. She was born on the 28th of August 1964 in Kenton, Kijabe.

Tabitha Mukami Muigai Karanja Education

The Keroche owner started her schooling years at Kiambogo Primary School for her preschool education. She later attended Bahati Girls Secondary School in Nakuru. Tabitha then proceeded to the Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Tabitha Karanja Career Journey

After completing her higher education at Kenya Methodist University, Tabitha joined the ministry of tourism where she got a job and worked as an accounting clerk. It is alleged that she worked there for two years before she met her husband Joseph Karanja who had a successful hardware business.

In 1997 after the couple had already gotten married, they decided to leave the hardware business and venture into winemaking. Keroche breweries was born, and the company started making fortified wine that targeted the local and low-end market.

Tabitha Karanja Politics

During the 2022 general elections, the Keroche breweries CEO, Tabitha Karanja vied for the Nakuru County senatorial seat under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), party ticket. She won by the majority of votes. She managed to bag a whopping 44,864 votes against Lawrence Karanja’s 163,625 votes who was her main competitor.

Keroche Breweries Ltd CEO Tabitha Karanja

The company was formed in 1997 by Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja. They started the company with a capital of Ksh 500,000 and two vehicles that the couple owned. The brewery started as a fortified wine manufacturer. It is the second largest national brewing company in Kenya with its biggest rival being East African Breweries. In 2008 they launched their first beer product Summit lager.

The company would later shift to the production of vodka and ready-to-drink gin in 2007 after the government imposed heavy taxes on locally made wines. This meant that keroche’s product would be priced out of the market.

The factory began expansion in 2008 to increase production from 60,000 bottles to 600,000 bottles a day. This was made possible by a Ksh. 5 billion ingestions in the plant. It was later commissioned by the cabinet secretary for industrialization Mr. Adan Mohammed on the 31st of March 2015.
