Sharif Ali attended the Kizingitini Primary School from 1985 for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) 1993 till 1996. He then moved to Khamis High School from 1993 to 1999 for his secondary school education.
In 1997 Sharif joined Pioneer Commercial College and did Diploma in Clearing and Forwarding then in 2011 he did certificate in Management at the Kenya Institute of Management.

Sharif Ali did business two years before he joined politics. In 2013 he vied and was elected the Member of Parliament for Lamu constituency. Sharif fought for land compensation on the farmers who lost their lands during the construction of Lamu port. He also supported in the establishment of a College in Lamu County which would later rise to a University.
