Margaret career began in 1988 when she worked at UNEP serving as a Soil consultant and this was during the Desertification Map. In 1999 she was made the Professor in Soil Science at Moi University an also served in a number of sectors in Moi’s administration. She was a also the chair of the Environment, Natural resources, Agriculture and Tourism Committee. Kamar was also an East African Legislative Assembly I.
In 2002 Margaret also was the leader of World Summit on Sustainable Development delegation which was to South Africa. In 2008 she led the Africa Caribbean and Pexific and European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly ACP-EU JPA delegation up to 2010. From 2010 to 2011 she worked as the assistant Minister Environment and Mineral Resource and then from 2011 to 2013 she was the minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
She became the director at a non-governmental organization named the International Centre for Research in Sustainable Development. During the 2007 general elections she was elected as the Eldorer East Constituency Member of parliament. During the 2022 general elections Margaret was elected the Senator.
