Mathew hockey career began with St. Louis Blues Youth teams. He then got drafted during the Ontario Hockey League by the London Knights. In his first season with the Knights he managed to score 107.
During his rookie season in 2016 Mathew led the Calgary to winning tend reaching the playoff where he also gathered himself 48 points.
During the 2018-2019 season Tkachuk earned the alternate captain for his team. During the season he also managed to place a new record of career high point in a 6-3 win against the Vegas Knights. In 2019 March he also made his another 100th career assist placing him at the position if the first player to have tea reached the milestone in his draft class. In September same year Tkachuk signed an extension contract of three years worth $21 million.
Three years later upon expiry of his contract in 2022 when he was just planning to resign he was sold to Florida Panthers.
