Kenneth Otiato Marende was the National assembly speaker of Kenya’s 10th Parliament. He was elected on January 15, 2008. Prior to his election as speaker Marende had served as the Mp of the Emuhaya Constituency from 2002 to 2007.

Early life and Age of Kenneth Marende

Marende was born on January 7, 1956 in Mumboha village, Ebusikhale sub-location Bunyore in Vihiga County. Information on his parents or siblings is unknown.

Education Background

Kenneth joined Ebusakami primary school and in 1969 when he completed his primary Education. He then joined Kakamega high school and sat for the East Africa Certificate of Education (EACE) in 1972.

In 1974 he sat for the East African Advanced Certificate in Kagumo high school where he had been enrolled for A-level.

In 1975 he was admitted to the University of Nairobi to do Degree Course in Law, after leaving
UON in 1978 he enrolled for a post-graduate diploma course at Kenya school of law.

Marende Career Journey

Kenneth started working as a state counsel in 1979 and rose through the rank to the level of senior state counsel.

In 1984 he left the government service to work with Bryson Inamdar and Bowyer Company advocates where he was admitted into partnership in 1986 until 1988 when he joined Warender and company advocates.

He is known to be a leading lawyer in Company law, Commercial law, Banking and Financial services, public sector law, corporate sector law joint ventures and labor law.

In 2012 in partnership with Dr. Ken Nyaundi they founded Marende and Nyaundi Associates which is located in the ACK Garden Annex along Ngong Avenue.

On January 5, 2015 Marende was appointed the chairman of the Board of Directors of Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited.

Additionally, in 2002 he joined politics where he vied for the parliamentary seat of the Emuhaya constituency which he won and served until 2008 when he was elected the speaker of the national
assembly of Kenya’s 10th parliament.

He is accredited for the broadcasting of the parliamentary proceedings in the house.

Awards

In 2008 he was awarded the highest award any Kenyan can receive The elder of Golden Heart (EGH). He was also awarded The Jurist of the year by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ-K)) in 2009. The advocate lifetime Roll of Honour.

His first wife was Dr. Lavender Marende past on in 2005. However, he married a second wife, Rachel Olubaru-reproductive health consultant. The couple married in 2002 under customary law but they separated in 2008.
