Kendall Coyne Playing Career
As a child, Kendall Coyne was a versatile athlete and participated in multiple sports, including baseball, basketball, softball, track, and hockey. Her enthusiasm for other sports was as intense as her love for hockey.
Throughout Kendall’s career, there were not many other girls playing hockey, so she often played on teams with all boys except for her. Despite this, her passion for hockey continued to grow, leading her to ask her parents if she could try out for AA travel hockey. Although she did not make the team and returned to house league, Kendall was determined to make a travel hockey team the following season. Her perseverance paid off when she not only made a travel hockey team but a AAA boys team, where she played against older players. Getting cut the previous year motivated Kendall to become a stronger player.
Kendall’s youth hockey career was impressive, but she had to stop playing games with boys at bantam minors because they had grown significantly bigger than her. However, she continued to practice with the boys’ teams and played girls’ hockey until she went to college.
Kendall Coyne USA Hockey
When Kendall was 15 years old, she received her first call from USA Hockey to join the U-18 team. Despite being the youngest member of the team, Kendall was thrilled to wear the colors of her country for the first time. In 2009, at 18 years old, Kendall was invited to try out for the 2009-2010 U.S. Olympic Team, but unfortunately, she did not make the cut.
As a result, Kendall returned to Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Illinois, to complete her senior year. In 2011, Kendall made her debut on the Senior National Team and played in her first World Championship. She also played college hockey at Northeastern University, where she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, graduating summa cum laude in both.

After achieving great success in her career as an Olympic and World Champion, Kendall Coyne has taken on a number of new ventures. Together with her husband Michael Schofield, she is the president and co-founder of the Schofield Family Foundation. The couple has also joined a new ownership group for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in 2020. As a board member for the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA), Kendall is working towards creating a sustainable professional women’s hockey league.
