Juliana Cherera is the current Vice chairperson at Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) in Kenya. Before joining IEBC Ms. Cherera was the Chief Officer Executive in the Strategic Delivery Unit of the Mombasa County Government.
IEBC is the only body that is mandated to carry out national elections and administrative boundaries review in Kenya. As such it did carry out its election mandate in the 2022 Kenya general election. However, Juliana Cherera and the other three IEBC commissioners distanced themselves from the President-elect and Deputy President Elect announcement by the Commission chairperson, Wafula Chebukati.

This led to splitting the number of commissioners into two. Chebukati allied commissioners are Prof. Abdi Yakub Guliye and Mr. Boya Molu while Cherera allied commissioners are Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyang’aya, and Irene Masit.

Juliana Cherera’s entry into IEBC
On July 14, 2021, Cherera was interviewed for the position of commissioner at IEBC. Additionally, she was later vetted by the parliament on August 24, 2021. In line with the law, her name was forwarded to the president for appointment as a commissioner at IEBC.
Juliana joined IEBC on September 14, 2021, and was unanimously elected as Vice-chairperson of the commission. One of her roles in the commission is to chair the Voter Education, Partnerships and Stakeholders Engagement Committee.
