He then joined CUEA in 2007 where he did bachelors of education science and graduated in 2010. Further, he did his master’s in education in 2011 in Aga Khan University and graduated in 2013.

As a teacher by profession Mwaruma started working as a teacher at Voi girls’ secondary school under Teachers Service commission. Later he worked at St Marys high school Lushangony.
He worked at the Taita Taveta Kenya National Union of Teachers where he was serving as the Executive Secretary. Mwaruma also served as a part time lecturer at Taita Taveta University.
During the 2017 general elections he vied for the Taita Taveta Senatorial seat and was elected on an ODM party ticket. During the 2022 general elections Mwaruma for the second time contested for the Taita Taveta County Senatorial position and he was successfully elected on an ODM party ticket a party under the opposition coalition party named Azimio La Umoja headed by Raila Odinga. Mwarume is serving the Taita Taveta Senatorial Seat for the second term.
