Jessi Colter Biography

Jessi Colter is the stage name of Mirriam Johnson who is an American country music artist. She is best known for her collaboration with her husband, a country singer and songwriter Waylon Jennings. Jessi released a popular hit, “I’m Not Lisa” in 1975.

Colter was amiong the few female artists to emerge from the mid-1970s “outlaw country” movement. After she met her husband, Jennings she pursued a career in country music. She released her first studio LP in 1970, A Country Star Is Born. However, Colter signed with Capitol Records and released her first solo single, “I’m Not Lisa”, five years later. The single topped the country charts and reached the top five on the pop charts. In 1976 she was featured on the collaboration LP Wanted: The Outlaws, which became an RIAA-certified Platinum album.

In 1961 Colter got married to her first husband was guitarist Duane Eddy but they later divorced in 1968. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Jennifer. In 1969, she married Waylon Jennings. Colter and Jennings have one son, Waylon Albright “Shooter” Jennings (born May 19, 1979). However, The couple Jennings died in 2002.

Colter has two children, a daughter from her first marriage, Jennifer and a son from her second marriage, Waylon Albright.

Colter began her music career by singing in local clubs in Phoenix. After marrying guitarist Duane Eddy in 1961 she released two singles that were issued on the Jamie label, “Lonesome Road” and a second single that failed to even get regional airplay. for the two singles she used her real name Mirriam Johnson.

After the two failed to top in the chart Johnson did not record for nearly a decade. However, she accompanied Eddy until their divorce in 1968. The following year, she met country artist Waylon Jennings who helped her secure a recording contract with RCA Victor.

In 1970 Colter resumed her recording career. She sang as duet with Waylon Jenning on two top 40 country chart hits. Additionally, she played Keyboard on March 25, 1970 for her husband during his appearance on The Johnny Cash Show. She released her first album, A Country Star is Born, on RCA, with Jennings and Chet Atkins co-producing. However, did not make an impact on the country music market.
