He attended Kiandieni primary school where he did his KCPE exams before joining secondary school, he then joined Technical University of Mombasa pursuing plant engineering. Later he went to Atlantic University where he did BSc Project Management. Additionally, he went to London Graduate School University to pursue master’s in mining and engineering. Then did PhD in Business Administration at the Commonwealth University.

James worked a plant operator and an engineer before he joined politics in 2017 where he was elected the Ward Representative for Kerugoya ward on a Jubilee party ticket. At the Kirinyaga County assembly he was elected the majority leader. In assembly committee he served as the Chairperson of the Selection committee, he was also a member of a number of other committees including the Agriculture Committee, County assembly business Committee, Marketing and ICT Committee, Transport, Roads and Public works Committees, Budget and Appropriation Committee and Environment, Water and Natural Resources Committee.
During the 2022 general elections James won the Kirinyaga senatorial seat having been elected on a UDA party ticket. In the senate he serves as the chairperson of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee
