Origin of Cappuccino

Cappuccino is an espresso-based coffee beverage made with espresso, steamed milk, and foam. Typically it has a stronger coffee flavor than a latte and is usually topped with cinnamon or cocoa powder.

Cappuccino is an Italian coffee beverage that was invented in the early 20th century. The original cappuccino is said to have been created in the early 1900s by a barista from the Italian city of Trieste. The barista, Raimondo, was credited for creating the cappuccino by combining espresso, steamed milk, and frothed milk to create the signature drink.

The name cappuccino is thought to have come from the Capuchin monks, who used to dress in a habit with a hood, similar to the shape of the foam on top of the cappuccino.

Ingredients

To make a cappuccino, you will need:

  1. shot of espresso
  2. 120 grams of steamed milk
  3. 28-40 grams of milk foam

Espresso

Espresso is an Italian coffee beverage that is made by forcing pressurized hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. It is usually served in small, concentrated amounts and is characterized by its strong flavor and aroma. Espresso is a popular choice for making other coffee drinks such as cappuccinos, macchiatos, lattes, Americanos, and mochas.

Preparation of espresso without an espresso machine

  1. Heat water to just under boiling.
  2. Grind coffee beans as finely as possible.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to a French press.
  4. Pour the hot water into the French press.
  5. Stir the mixture for 30 seconds.
  6. Place the lid on the French press, but do not press the plunger down yet.
  7. Allow the mixture to steep for 4 minutes.
  8. After 4 minutes, press the plunger down slowly.

Steamed milk preparation

Steamed milk is a creamy, hot milk beverage made by introducing steam or hot air into milk using an espresso machine steam wand. The milk is typically used to make cappuccinos, lattes, and other espresso-based drinks. It is also a popular beverage on its own, served hot or cold. In the absence of an espresso machine, it is still possible to make steamed milk. It can be done by the French press method or the stovetop method.

French press method

Heat milk in a saucepan until it is hot, but not boiling. Pour the hot milk into a French press, then press the plunger down until it is about halfway down. Gently move the plunger up and down for 30 seconds, then press the plunger to the bottom of the French press.

Stovetop method

Heat milk in a saucepan until it is hot, but not boiling. Turn the heat off and whisk the milk vigorously for 1 minute, then put the lid on the pan and let it sit for 1-2 minutes. Uncover the pan and whisk the milk vigorously for another minute.

Milk foam

Milk foam is a light and airy foam created by running steam through cold or heated milk in an espresso machine. The foam is often used as a topping for coffee drinks, such as cappuccinos and lattes. It is also used in desserts and other recipes to add sweetness and texture.

Cappuccino preparation

  1. First, brew a shot of espresso.
  2. While the espresso is brewing, heat, and foam the milk. To do this, use a milk frother or steam wand on an espresso machine to heat the milk to about 150-160 degrees Fahrenheit and create a velvety foam. If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat and use a frothing wand or whisk to create the foam.
  3. Pour the brewed espresso into a cappuccino cup or a small mug.
  4. Add the steamed milk to the cup, filling it about halfway.
  5. Top the cappuccino with a layer of milk foam, using a spoon to hold back the foam as you pour the milk.
  6. If desired, you can sprinkle some cocoa powder or cinnamon on top of the foam for an added touch.

And there you have it! Your cappuccino is now ready to be enjoyed.
