At the age of 17 is when potters love for football developed at the Birmingham City. His first contract was with Wycombe Wanderers which was on loan. Later he moved to Stoke City and then to Southampton an English Premier League.
It was in Southampton where he was crowned the England under-21 in a European Championships qualifier match. The match was against Moldova.
After Southampton Potter he joined West Bromwich Albion and played for three and a half years. He then signed a contract with York City, he appeared in 100 matches before he joined Shrewsbury Town which was on loan in November 2003. Later in 2004 he played for free to Macclesfield Town. This where he finished his playing career.
After quitting football Graham worked for University of Hull as a football development manager. Additionally, he also worked as the technical director for Ghana women’s team at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
He then joined Leeds Beckett University formerly known as Leeds Metropolitan University where he worked as the assistant coach. Later for a short time he was appointed the manager of Northern Counties East League Division.
However, in January 2011 he moved to Leeds Carnegie and moved to the Swedish club Ostersund as a manager the same month and year. In June 2018 Potter was appointed the manager for Swansea City for one year before moving to Brighton & then Hove Albion.
In September 2022 Chelsea a premier league club appointed potter as the new head coach under a five year contract.
