Dr. Boni Khalwale is a renowned Kenyan politician, medical doctor, and businessman. He is the current senator of Kakamega County. He was born on August 5th, 1960, in Sichirai village, Ikolomani Constituency, in Kakamega County. Dr. Khalwale is known for his fierce and controversial political stance and has had a long and illustrious political career. He is a self-made man who rose from humble beginnings to become a formidable political force in Kenya.

Dr. Khalwale began his education in Malinya Primary School where he sat for his Certificate of Primary Education in 1974. Later, he joined Musinya high school in 1975 for his O levels. In 1979, he joined Kakamega high school and completed his A levels in 1980.

 He later enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Medicine degree, graduating in 1987.

Medical Career

After completing his studies, he worked as a medical officer at Kakamega Provincial General Hospital, where he honed his medical skills and gained invaluable experience.

In addition to his political career, Dr. Khalwale is also a successful businessman. He owns a private hospital, the Malinya Hospital, which provides healthcare services to the people of Kakamega County and the surrounding areas.

Political Career

Despite his successful medical career, Dr. Khalwale developed an interest in politics and joined the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) in 2002. He contested the parliamentary seat for the Ikolomani constituency and won, marking the beginning of his political career.

During his tenure as a Member of Parliament, he served in various committees, including the Finance, Planning, and Trade Committee, where he championed policies that would benefit the people of Ikolomani and the larger Western Kenya region.

In 2007, Dr. Khalwale won re-election as a Member of Parliament under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. He continued to push for policies that would promote regional development, including advocating for the construction of a dam to supply water to Kakamega County. He also supported the empowerment of women and youth and championed their inclusion in leadership positions.

However, the elections were nullified in February 2011 and a by-election was conducted but he retained his seat this time under the New Ford Kenya party ticket. He defeated ODM’s Bernard Shinalinu by over 3000 votes.

In 2013, Dr. Khalwale decided to contest the senatorial seat for Kakamega County under the United Democratic Forum (UDF) party. He won the election and became a senator, a position he held until 2017.

In the 2017 general elections, he locked heads with Wycliffe Oparanya among other mulembe nation political heads for the Kakamega County gubernatorial seat. However, he lost to Oparanya who was serving his last and final term.

He redeemed himself in the 2022 general elections after being voted in as senator for Kakamega County under the United Democratic Alliance party ticket.

Unfortunately Khalwales’ wife Adelaide, allegedly succumbed to cervical cancer on the 5th of October 2019. The couple had been together for 39 years. Khalwale stated that two days before her wifes’ death, she had been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension which he claims killed her. Adelaide worked at the Department of Education at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology as a secretary.
