Danson Buya Mungatana is a Kenyan politician and lawyer known to many as ‘the crocodile eater’. He was born on the 9th of August 1970 in his home village. He is currently the senator of Tana River County.

Danson Mungatana’s early life and family

The senator was born and raised in a stout Christian home. His father was a Pokomo and his mother a Taita. Mungatana has five siblings, four brothers, and a sister.

Mungatana was born on 9th of August 1970. Therefore, he is 53 years years old.

Education background of Danson Mungatana

The Tana River senator started his schooling years at Mary Cliff Primary School for his preschool. However, he did not complete his schooling years there. He joined Ronald Ngala Primary School in Mombasa County from class one to four. Again, he moved to Arap Moi primary school in Ngao, Tana River from class five to seven and moved back to his home village in Tana River to complete his primary education as per their tradition. Despite his father working in Mombasa, he saw it best for all of his children to finish school in their home village as a form of learning about the ways of life of his people the Pokomo.

After completing his primary school education, he was fortunate enough to join Alliance High school. He completed in 1987 and joined the University of Nairobi where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in trade and investment law. As the norm for any aspiring lawyer in Kenya, he joined the Kenya School of Law for the Postgraduate diploma in law for his practicing license. He graduated in 1995.

Career path of Danson Mungatana

With his law degree, Mungatana started his law firm the Mungatana company advocates from where he practiced.

Political career

Mungatana sprung from the spotlight in 2002 when he was elected as an MP to Garsen Constituency on a Narc-Kenya ticket. He was re-elected in 2007 and appointed Narc Kenya Garsen constituency chairman. He served as an assistant minister in several ministries from the ministry of provisional administration and Internal Security between 2004-2005, Lands 2005-2006, foreign affairs 2006, and Medical Services (2008–2009).

In 2013, he ran for the gubernatorial seat of Tana River county under The National Alliance party ticket. However, he lost to Hussein Dado who vied under the Wiper Democratic Movement party ticket. Again in 2007 he vied for the same seat but was unfortunate too. He only attain the fourth position.

The 53 years old lawyer was appointed as the chairman of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), by president Uhuru Kenyatta in 2014. However, his appointment was revoked after six months due to unclear reasons.

Mungatana tried his luck in elective seats again in 2022 where he managed to be elected as the Senator of Tana River County. He vied under the United Democratic Alliance party ticket. This was a major comeback as he was away from politics since 2013 when he was MP.

Mungatana’s wife and children

Danson Mungatana is married to two wives. He, however, lost his first wife Violet Wairimu in 2009 while undergoing dialysis at the Coptic Hospital, in Nairobi. The couple had three children, two boys, and a girl. Before her death, the two were already separated and living independent lives after Mungatana’s affair with his second wife Mwanaisha Chidzunga.

His second wife, Mwanaisha also took a bite in politics in the 2022 elections as she vied for the Matuga Constituency parliamentary seat but lost. Mwanaisha Chidzunga is a former news anchor and she proficient in Kiswahili. She worked at KBC, KTN, BBC, and Pwani FM. The couple has four children.

It is also alleged that Mungatana dated and even married former Miss Kenya Cecilia Mwangi. Additionally, it is said that they have a daughter.

Wash Wash

According to sources, between March and September 2018, Mungatana had invested 76 millions into a scheme where he would have his money multiplied four times. The con men allegedly from west Africa lured him with the money they gave him from a bank or forex bureau to confirm authenticity. This would have him gain trust in them. After confirming that the money was real Mungatana was enticed to gain more wealth so he gave them his Mercedes.

The conmen kept insisting on more money and Mungatana was forced to sell his Karen piece of land. The senator kept waiting but did not receive his money, he smelt a rat and reported the matter to the authorities. The police managed to recover his vehicle and fake dollars amounting to KSh. 1 billion which was to be given to Mungatana by the con men. Their ops center was discovered in a house in Westlands.
The con men involved in the scheme were identified as Abdoulaye Tamba Kouro and his son Abdala Tamba from Mali. Anthony Mangangi Munyiva from Kenya was also involved in the scheme.
