Daniel Maanzo Biography

Daniel Maanzo Kitonga is a Kenyan politician and the current Senatorial representative of Makueni County. He was born on the 12th of December 1971 in his home village Yekanga, Makueni county.

Daniel Maanzo Education

Hon. Maanzo Kitonga received his early education at Kanthuni Primary School in Makueni (1980), where he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary education in 1988. He later proceeded to Starehe Boys Center in Kiambu between 1989 – 1992, where he took his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

 After completing his secondary education, he joined the University of Nairobi in 1994, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws degree. He graduated in 1998 and went on to study at the Kenya School of Law, where he received his post-graduate diploma in legal practice in 1999.

Daniel Maanzo Career

Daniel Maanzo is also an accomplished lawyer and is a partner at the law firm Maanzo & Company Advocates. He worked at various law firms at the onset of his career. These include M/s Pheroze Nowrojee & Company in 1998 as a pupilage, Pheroze Nowrojee & Company for one year as an Associate Advocate, and Sheth & Wathigo Advocates between 2003 – 2006 as a partner.

In addition, he also worked as a lecturer at Kenya Polytechnic in 2001. 

Dan Maanzo worked at various government and political party offices in the Legal field before joining politics. For instance, he worked as a Legal Advisor and the first chairman of the Orange Democratic Movement Kenya (ODM-K), party. The senator also worked at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as a secretary in 2008 and at the Ministry of Cooperatives Development and Marketing still as a secretary between 2009 – 2012.

Political Career

He joined the political space in the 2013 general elections, where he was successfully elected as the Makueni Constituency Member of Parliament. Maanzo would be re-elected in the subsequent 2017 general elections.

In the 2022 general elections, he vied for the senatorial seat of Makueni County and won by the majority of votes against former Makueni County Governor Kivutha Kibwana.

Having worked for the Government for the better part of his career, it is safe to assume that the former MP is well off. As a Member of parliament, he was entitled to a KSh. 621,250 salary and hefty allowances. In his newly acquired seat, he receives a salary of KSh. 510,000 per month and allowances of up to Ksh. 250,000.

Daniel Maanzo Controversy

In 2007, Daniel Maanzo sparked controversy after making his way with the Orange Democratic Movement Kenya ODM-K, Registration Certificate. He used this as leverage for Kalonzo Musyoka’s presidential bid.

Hon. Maanzo together with Prof. Julia Ojiambo, moved to court to sue Kalonzo over claims that he failed to nominate them to parliament. This is after allegations that Kalonzo wanted to hand the slots to Shakila Abdalla and Mohamed Abdi Afayei. The duo wanted the court to stop the Electoral Commission of Kenya from forwarding Shakila Abdalla and Mohamed Abdi Afayei from gazettement.

The former MP together with his wife were once accosted by vagabonds at their home in Kisembe Kipevu Karen Hardy. The couple was injured and later admitted for further treatment where they were robbed of cash and other valuables.
