Who is the Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama is the head of the dominant Dge-lugs-pa meaning a Yellow Hat which is an order of Tibetan Buddhists which have been both spiritual and temporal ruler of Tibet since its beginning in the 14th century. The history says that there have been a number of Dalai lamas since its beginning.

History and leadership

The first Dalai Lama was the Dge-’dun-grub-pa who ruled from 1391–1475. He was the founder and abbot of Tashilhunpo monastery which was the central Tibet. They had a belief in the reincarnation of lamas, whereby the successors were conceived as rebirths and came to be regarded as the

The second one was the Dge-lugs-pa order, Dge-’dun-rgya-mtsho who ruled from 1475–1542, he became the head abbot of the ’Bras-spungs (Drepung) the monastery on the outskirts of Lhasa, the principal seat of the Dalai Lama was thenceforward.

The third Dalai Lama was Bsod-nams-rgya-mtsho who ruled from 1543–88, he visited the Mongol chief Altan Khan he received the honorific title ta-le (Anglicized as “dalai”) which is the Mongolian equivalent of the Tibetan rgya-mtsho, which had the meaning of “ocean” and it also suggested breadth and depth of wisdom.

The fourth Dalai Lama, Yon-tan-rgya-mtsho who ruled from 1589–1617. He was the great-grandson of Altan Khan and was also the only non-Tibetan Dalai Lama.

The seventh one was Bskal-bzang-rgya-mtsho and he ruled from 1708 to 1757. He is the Dala whom experienced the civil war and the founding of the Chinese Manchu suzerainty over the Tibet.

 The eighth Dala Lamawas ’Jam-dpal-rgya-mtsho who ruled from 1758 to 1804, this is when his his country was invaded by Gurkha troops who came from Nepal. They managed to beat them with the help of Chinese army.

The 9th Dala was Lung-rtogs-rgya-mtsho who ruled from 1806 to 1915 and died. The 10th Dala was next was Tshul-khrims-rgya-mtsho who ruled from 1816 to 1837 and died. The 11th Dala was Mkhas-grub-rgya-mtsho who ruled from 1838 to 1856 and died. The twelfth was ’Phrin-las-rgya-mtsho rulled from 1856 to 1875.

13th Dalai Lama

The 13th Dalai was Thub-bstan-rgya-mtsho and he ruled from 1875 to 1933 he ruled with so much personal authority. The revolt within China against the ruling Manchu dynasty in 1912 made it easy for  Tibetans the opportunity chase away the disunited Chinese troops who were disunited and this enabled the Dalai Lama to reign his power as the head of a sovereign state.

14th Dalai Lama

The 14 dalai Lama was named  Bstan-’dzin-rgya-mtsho (Tenzin Gyatso) who was born Lhamo Thondup in 1935 which is presently kniwn as Tsinghai province in China, of the Tibetan parentage. The 14th Dalai was recognized to be the incarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1937 when he was two years old, and he was enthroned in 1940 the bestowed with full powers as head of state in 1950.

Dalai Lama exile

During the revolt by Tebetans fighting against the communist Chinese forces he fled to exile in India where he also set a government-in-exile within Dharmsala in Himalayan mountains in India. In 1989 he was awarded for peace due to his nonviolent campaign to end Chinese domination of Tibet. He also suggested to appoint his successor rather than being his reincarnation which was ejected by the government of China. He resigned as the head of Tibetan government-in-exile. Different from other Dalais who concentrated in leadership and power he wrote books on Tibetan Buddhism
