Hammon career began at Colorado State University where she did her college basketball and was the Schools all-time leading scorer after he recorded 2740 points during her school time. When she graduated in 1999, she went undrafted and same year signed as a free agent by the New York Liberty and spent eight consecutive seasons with the team and emerged the all-star selection.

In 2007 the Liberty traded her to San Antonio Silver Stars currently named Las Vegas Aces, she played with the aces till her retirement in 2014. After retiring she joined coaching and her former team San Antonio Spurs hired her as a full female assistant coach.
Her new career have been a success and due to her ability to interact with the players, work ethic and her knowledge. Hammond is also a Women sports advocates and also a mentor. Because of her hard work and dedication, she has received a number of honors. In 2021, she was induced into the Women’s basketball Hall of fame. In December the Aces appointed her as the head coach, the following year during the 2022 WNBA championship the Aces emerged winner.
